What are these temper tantrums?

Children reach a certain age when they feel the need to be more independent and make their own decisions. As soon as they are prevented from doing something they wish, as some activities might pose a threat to the child's well being, they start to show signs of frustration and anger, behavior known in children as temper tantrum. These tantrums manifest themselves loudly through ear piercing screams, kicking and hysterical crying. A parent will be able to easily determine when a temper tantrum is happening as you just cannot ignore this frustrating behavior.

Temper tantrums usually occur in children with ages between 1 and 3. Children have different personalities, this is why some children experience frequently temper tantrums, some experience them rarely while other hardly at all.

How to handle these temper tantrums?

It is imperative to learn how to properly handle these temper tantrums in order to limit them or stop them from evolving. Handling the situation wrong can make your child's temper tantrums worst in order to satisfy his/her need of attention. Here are some tips to help you prevent or deal with temper tantrums:

Make sure to keep the objects that are off limits away from your child to avoid triggering a tantrum. If your child doesn't make visual contact with such an object he will not turn to tantrums to obtain it.

Try to distract the attention of your child as soon as you think a tantrum is about to happen. Replace the desired object with something safe and make it seem interesting enough to capture your child's attention. This way your child will forget about his frustration and not throw a fit. Entertainment can be a great weapon of distraction.

Try to allow your child a little bit of freedom as long as it is safe. Maybe what your child is asking for is not dangerous.

Do make sure your child receives the sleep he needs as these temper tantrums can be triggered by tiredness. By sleeping at the proper hours your child will be able to be more relaxed and less irritable.

Try not to give in when your child is throwing a temper tantrum as this way you will only demonstrate to your child that this behavior will help him receive what he desires. Do not punish or reward your child if possible just try to stay calm and distract his/her attention.

Ignore your child while having a tantrum. Explain to your child that this kind of behavior is not acceptable and resume to your regular chores while making sure your child is in a safe area.

Try to isolate your child if possible by placing him in an area which is safe and has a calming effect over him/her.

It seems that when these tantrums happen in public the parents are even more frustrated. Being in the center of attention due to your child's tantrum can be very frustrating for a parent but try to maintain yourself calm and don't pay attention to the people around you. If possible take your child to an isolated area like your car and wait for the tantrum to pass. Make sure to talk and explain to your child that you do not like his behavior when he/she is throwing a temper tantrum.

Keep in mind that preventing a tantrum is so much easier than having to deal with one so try your best to pay attention to your child's behavior to be able to tell when a tantrum is about to happen. The good thing is that temper tantrums don't last forever and they will eventually disappear from your life for good.
